Why a shot list matters even when your photographer is good
A great wedding photographer will get 90% of these frames without a shot list. But couples forget the specific details that matter to them — the grandmother's ring, the father's cufflinks, the best friend no one else knows is also the ring bearer. A shot list isn't for the photographer's benefit. It's for yours.
Below are the forty photos our couples most often keep, print, and hand down. Use it as a menu, not a checklist.
Getting ready
1. The dress hanging with bridal details
Shot first thing in the morning, before hair and makeup. The dress on a wooden hanger, shoes, jewelry, perfume, the invitation suite, and the rings arranged together. This is the detail frame that opens most wedding albums.
2. Bride and bridesmaids
The group in matching robes or PJs, laughing in the mirror — or the quieter version, hair half-done, champagne in hand. One posed, one candid. Never just one.
3. Hair and makeup in progress
Over-the-shoulder frame of the stylist at work, the bride's face half-finished. This frame ages beautifully because nobody on the day thinks to ask for it.
4. Mother and bride
Before the dress goes on. The first-look-at-the-dress-on-daughter frame. Usually one of the most emotional moments of the morning. Budget a few minutes just for this.
5. Groom getting ready
Tying the tie, fastening the boutonniere, the last look in the mirror before walking out. The groom-prep set tends to be shorter than the bride's — that's fine. Shoot for 15 quality frames, not 50.
6. Groom and groomsmen
A posed group, one frame. Plus one candid — usually a toast or a mid-joke laugh. Grooms' side rarely gets as much coverage as brides'. Ask for it by name.
First Look & Portraits
7. First look with partner
Planned or spontaneous, it's often the emotional peak of the day. Shoot from the side, not the front — the partner's face reveal is the frame you'll keep. Allow 15–20 minutes and privacy.
8. Couple portrait session
Scheduled either after first look or during cocktail hour. Budget 40–60 minutes minimum. Not rushed. Couples who give the photographer time here always have a better gallery.
9. Bride alone
One strong solo bridal portrait. Good light, good background, the dress in full. This is the frame that lives on a parent's mantel.
10. Bride with bridesmaids (group)
Separate from the getting-ready casual set. Posed, bouquets in hand, all dressed, good light. One classic frame, one more relaxed.
11. Bride with maid of honor
A private frame of the bride with her best friend or sister. Skip the group for ninety seconds. This one gets printed and gifted.
12. Groom and groomsmen formal
Suited, shot outside or in good light, classic composition. One frame, 90 seconds of setup.
Ceremony
13. Flower girl or ring bearer
One frame, either walking or waiting. Candid reads better than posed with kids. Don't overdirect.
14. Wedding party walking down the aisle
Shoot both sides of the aisle if you have two photographers. With one, position at the front for the entrance shots and double back for the recessional.
15. Bride walking down the aisle
Full-length frame showing the dress, the aisle, the guests. Plus a detail frame of her face — focus on the expression, not the room.
16. Groom's face watching bride walk
The single most repeatable "emotional peak" of any ceremony. Always shoot it. Always over-shoot it — you want a frame where his eyes are actually visible.
17. Exchange of rings
Close-up. 85mm minimum. Hands in the middle of the frame, bouquet out of the way. Two frames: one from the side, one from behind the officiant.
18. First kiss
The frame that sells the album. Shoot three, not one — the sealed kiss, the break, the laugh after. The third is often the keeper.
19. Walking out of the ceremony
Confetti, petals, bubbles, cheers — or just the couple's face as they hit the aisle. This is the "we did it" frame and it should feel like relief.
20. Guests' reactions during vows
Pan across the front row. Grandparents wiping eyes, best friends gripping tissues, kids confused. These candids are what fill the middle of the album.
Family photos
21. First look with parents
Often a separate moment before the ceremony — the parents seeing the bride or groom in their dress/suit for the first time. Budget 10 minutes, schedule it before guests start arriving.
22. Bride with family
Parents + siblings + grandparents. Classic posed. Then one candid — usually someone laughing or a grandparent hugging the bride.
23. Groom with family
Mirror the bride's family set. Same formula.
24. Full wedding party group
Everyone in the ceremony role together — bride, groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls, ring bearers, officiant. One frame, 90 seconds of setup.
Reception
25. Bridesmaids entrance
The entrance pre-bride-and-groom. Good setup shot to tell the photographer about in advance — they'll line up in the right spot.
26. Groomsmen entrance
Same mirror. If your groomsmen plan to do anything choreographed, tell the photographer so they can frame for it.
27. Bride and groom entrance
The reception entrance. Shoot it from the DJ booth, not from the dance floor — the wide-angle with guests cheering is the frame you want.
28. Reception venue wide shot
Empty, before guests arrive. Capture the full room — tables set, candles lit, cake where it lives, the full tablescape. Five minutes of the photographer's time. Always worth it.
29. Floral and venue detail shots
Close-ups of centerpieces, place settings, the bar setup. The detail gallery that gets pulled into save-the-anniversary spreads five years later.
30. Menu cards
If you invested in custom menu cards, make sure one of them gets a proper product shot — good light, clean background. Ask for it.
31. Tablescapes and centerpieces
One frame per table type if you have multiples. Otherwise one strong wide and one detail.
32. First dance
Three frames minimum: wide room, medium with the couple and a ring of guests, and close on the couple's faces. Schedule in the first hour of reception — late first dances always end up underlit.
33. Parent dances
Mother-son, father-daughter, or whatever variation fits your family. These are among the highest-emotion reception frames and they're often printed full-size.
34. Speeches and toasts
Shoot the speaker AND the couple's reaction. Two frames of the same moment — the person talking, and the person being talked about. The reaction shot is almost always the keeper.
35. Cake cutting
One from the side, one from the front, one from behind. Three angles so you can frame one and save two. Don't smash it in their face unless you've discussed it in advance.
36. Cake and dessert details
Before any slicing. The full cake, the dessert table, the donut wall, the cookie trays. Detail frames of the final setup.
37. Dance floor candids
The longest continuous shoot of the reception. Photographer moves, uses flash sparingly, watches for the moments — the grandma and groom dancing, the drunk best friend's solo, the couple mid-laugh. This is where the gallery gets its texture.
38. Bouquet and garter toss
Optional tradition. If you're doing either, the photographer needs to know timing and position. Burst mode. Fast shutter. Predictive AF locked on the bride's/groom's hand.
39. Send-off
Sparklers, confetti, bubbles, petals. Rehearse the line once. Shoot from low angle, wide enough to get the crowd and the couple. One of the most-printed frames from any wedding.
40. Candid moments throughout
The frames no shot list predicts — the toddler asleep on the dance floor, the best man emotional during his speech, the grandparents dancing at 10pm, the rain break, the venue dog. These are the frames that win the album.
