Golden hour off the Tidal Basin in early spring, with the cherry blossoms hitting peak bloom for barely a week and the Jefferson Memorial behind you, is one of the best 30 minutes of light in the country — but the crowds are real and the permit window is narrow. We plan portraits around it. A ceremony at the Mellon Auditorium catches hard midday light through 40-foot windows; a Georgetown rooftop at dusk gives you the Potomac and the Key Bridge going gold.
