AESTHETIC Urban Love | Engagement Session at Union Station, Seattle, WA

Diana and David didn't want a nature engagement session. No beach, no park, no meadow. They wanted a city frame — architecture, texture, a color palette that read as urban rather than romantic. That narrowed the location list fast.
Union Station in Seattle's Chinatown-International District ended up being the right call. Restored turn-of-the-century transit architecture, high ceilings, warm interior light, and a lobby that photographs as historic without reading as a museum set. We shot mid-day — which is unusual for engagements (most sessions are timed for golden hour) but necessary here because the sun needs to hit through the clerestory windows for the interior light to work.
The setting
The palette
Here's the part that made this session work: Diana and David chose their outfits to match the venue's existing color palette, not the other way around. Warm earth tones, deep emerald accents, turquoise pastels. The building's interior is a warm stone; their outfits pulled the same temperature. The result is an edit that looks curated without feeling over-produced.
Most couples pick outfits for how they look in a mirror, then show up to a location that fights them. The cheat is the opposite — scout the location, pick wardrobe to harmonize, shoot.
What to steal
If you're planning an urban engagement session in Seattle:
- Scout the venue at the same time of day you plan to shoot. The light in Union Station at 11am and at 3pm is completely different.
- Check access rules first. Some historic venues require a permit for commercial photography. Union Station is relatively relaxed, but don't assume.
- Pick wardrobe to harmonize with the building, not contrast it. The quiet edits age better than the loud ones.
- Shoot interior-only sessions in winter. February in Seattle means reliable cloud cover outside and warm, controllable light inside. Trade the park session for an architecture session when the weather won't cooperate.
